Labial Reshaping or Labiaplasty

Labial Reshaping or Labiaplasty

What is Labiaplasty or Labial Reshaping?

Labiaplasty is the term for re-contouring of the female genitalia, or labia. Women have two pairs of labia: the inner, hairless skin folds next to the vaginal opening are the labia minora and the outer, hair bearing folds are the labia majora.

Why Labiaplasty?

Many women suffer from enlarged labia minora (the inner genital lips). Some may not like the appearance of their large, uneven or thick labia, which can sometimes extend beyond the labia majora. Others may be bothered by labial irritation while conducting normal activities, or may find it difficult to keep the labial area clean. Still others may experience pain during sexual intercourse, sports or other vigorous activities.

Procedure

Labiaplasty of the minora corrects natural irregularity, excess size, or changes due to prior trauma to the labia, like those with the childbirth. This procedure is the most common type of labiaplasty and it is easily performed under local anaesthesia. After revising the excess skin, small stitches are used to repair the labia. The stitches are mostly dissolvable or are removed within two weeks, yielding a scar which is mostly invisible.

In some patients, particularly those with larger minora, excess skin folds are also found on either side of the clitoral hood. These extra folds can also be reshaped at the time of labiaplasty to achieve improved balance of the genital skin.

Labiaplasty of the majora is done when patients have significant bulge of the majora. These concerns may result from significant weight fluctuations that occur with pregnancy or with loss of elasticity of the skin because of aging. The procedure remains the same like that of the Labioplasty of the minora, just with more sutures and duration.

Complications, Care
  • Apply a topical triple antibiotic ointment to the suture lines for 10 days.
  • Place a piece of gauze between your labia.
  • Wear cotton undergarments and avoid any undergarment that is tight or irritating for 4 weeks.
  • You may shower the day following the procedure – pat your labia dry, do not rub. Do not take a general bath or go swimming for two weeks.
  • Take ample rest for one to two days following the procedure.
  • Avoid excessive walking, sitting for prolonged periods of time, and exertion.
  • Avoid exercise (no running, heavy lifting, straining, etc.) for four to six weeks.
  • Avoid straddle activities like cycling, horseback riding for at least four weeks.
  • Avoid sexual activity for four weeks.
  • Take the antibiotic as prescribed to help prevent infection.

Results

After Labiaplasty, women restore labia’s natural-looking color and shape. The results of labiaplasty:

  • Better the appearance of the vagina and vulva
  • Improve self-confidence
  • Decrease discomfort caused by clothes rubbing against the labia
  • Reduce and gradually eliminate pain caused by large labia during sexual intercourse
  • Improve sexual pleasure otherwise hampered by large labi
